Internet security is more important than ever before.  Hackers are developing new techniques every day to try and steal your content, information, and customer information.  If you don’t have good security in place, your entire business could break down.

But what do you need in terms of finding the best internet security?  Antivirus, firewalls, malware protection, the list of available products is endless.

If you’re looking for antivirus software that goes above and beyond just protecting your home computer from viruses, a full-on security suite is your best choice.  A complete security suite will offer you protection for all your connected devices, not just your MacBook or PC.

Some versions cover Android phones and iPhones and up to five devices at a time.

Some internet security providers give you a rescue disk to retrieve your information after an attack or stop an attack in progress.  Encryption software, privacy features, firewalls, and parental controls are often included.

The majority of security suites are aimed at domestic customers, but there are packages aimed at businesses as well.  These include cloud antivirus and endpoint protection to keep your business and customer information secure.  Cybersecurity courses are also available to help you understand how to encrypt your information.

There’s a host of internet security suites on the market, but which is best?  We’ve broken down six popular brands to help you choose.

Best Internet Security Suites

1. Kaspersky Total Security

Specs:

  • Operates on Windows and Mac, Android, and iOS
  • It covers a maximum of 10 devices

Unique features:

  • Safe money secure web browser access, firewall, Safe Kids parental controls

Pros:

  • Strong virus engine
  • Strong parental controls
  • It doesn’t use up your computer’s resources

Cons:

  • Not all features are high quality

Kaspersky is a well-known name in the internet security world, and it delivers the top-notch antivirus protection you would expect.  Kaspersky products don’t use up a lot of your computer resources, which is one reason their products are so popular.

If you’re running this software on a laptop, a newly introduced feature is introduced to help minimize your battery drain.

While the antivirus protection Kaspersky provides is second to none, the extra features are pretty basic.  The Total Security package offers good functionality and many more features than the basic Kaspersky Anti-Virus package, with a comparable price point.

An intelligent firewall that doesn’t bother you with constant pop-up messages, web browser security, webcam hijack security, file backup tools, and a password manager are all included, along with their Safe Kids package.

2. Norton 360 Deluxe

Specs:

  • Operates on Windows and Mac, Android, and iOS
  • It covers up to 5 devices at one time

Unique features:

  • Parental controls, VPN access, online backup, dark web monitoring (if you are located in the US)

Pros:

  • Fully integrated VPN
  • Excellent parental controls
  • Intelligent firewall

Cons:

  • Higher performance impact than most other security software

While there are several security suite options available with Norton, Norton 360 Deluxe is the best value all-around choice if you’re looking to protect more than one device.

Norton has solid antivirus protection, webcam protection, and if you’re a US user, you also get dark web monitoring.

Norton’s intelligent firewall and parental control system make it stand out from the rest.  It has in-depth monitoring systems to track your children’s online activities, including GPS trackers for mobile devices.

The Norton VPN and 50 GB of backup storage are worth noting as they could be a huge money-saver.  Norton’s package pricing is comparable to other security suites, even with these extra features.

The one negative of Norton’s security products that you should keep in mind is that it’s a drag on system resources.  Many people don’t require high performance from their desktop or laptop anyway and don’t notice the difference.

However, if you need high-quality video and audio performance, you may notice your system lagging after Norton is installed.

3. Bitdefender Total Security

Specs:

  • Operates on Windows and Mac, Android, and iOS
  • It covers up to 10 devices at one time

Unique features:

  • Online banking protection with Safepay, high-quality ransomware defense, web protection module

Pros:

  • Lots of features
  • High-quality web surfing protection
  • 30 day free trial available without providing credit card details

Cons:

  • Very basic PC maintenance tools

Bitdefender Total Security stands out for its wide range of available features.  With Bitdefender, you get:

  • Standard antivirus
  • Ransomware protection
  • Firewall
  • Wi-fi security advisor
  • A secure browser called Safepay for online banking security
  • A file shredder
  • Vulnerability scanner (which has recently been upgraded in 2021)
  • Password manager
  • Email spam filter
  • Parental controls
  • Webcam
  • Microphone defense
  • Web protection module that blocks suspicious URLs from being accessed

Bitdefender Total Security also provides maintenance and optimization tools if you are running a PC.  They help clean out extra files and improve your load times.  Mac users won’t miss this feature, as Mac has built-in file cleanup tools in its operating system.

The impact on system performance is minimal with this software.  It’s not the best on the market, but the majority of users won’t notice an impact.

An email address is all you need to try out the 30 day trial of this product.

Best Internet Security Suites

4. ESET Smart Security Premium

Specs:

  • Operates on Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android
  • It covers up to 10 devices at one time

Unique features:

  • Network protection, password manager, anti-theft

Pros:

  • Highly customizable
  • Light on system resources

Cons:

  • Some underpowered features

Many features are packed into ESET Smart Security Premium, including parental controls, webcam and microphone protection, network monitoring and protection, and an anti-theft feature.  It’s important to note that the anti-theft is only available for Windows devices.

While there’s a lot of features, their quality isn’t as good as it could be.  Parental controls are very basic and comparable to the built-in controls on a MacBook, but the password manager is top-notch.

What stands out about ESET is the customization options.  It offers a ton of different options for configuration but will leave novices to internet security struggling to set it up.

5. McAfee Total Protection Multi-Device

Specs:

  • Operates on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS
  • It covers up to 5 devices at one time

Unique features:

  • Configurable firewall
  • Password manager
  • Performance booster

Pros:

  • The high-quality spam filter system
  • Basic VPN (that’s fully integrated)
  • Good value for your money

Cons:

  • Clunky interface
  • Only average protection against malware

McAfee is another household name in the internet security department.  It is available for purchase in two formats:  Total Protection Individual for one device or Total Protection Multi-Device.  If you’re a US resident, McAfee also adds on identity theft protection to your security suite.

McAffee offers fantastic virus protection and a very user-friendly interface.  For beginners, it’s ideal, while advanced users may find it lacking in functionality.

The one extra McAfee provides are tools to boost your web browsing and app performance, along with a fully integrated VPN.

6. AVG Antivirus

Specs:

  • Operates on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS

Unique features:

  • On-demand malware scanning
  • On-access malware scanning
  • Website ratings
  • Phishing protection
  • Behavior based detection
  • Malicious URL blocking

Pros:

  • Excellent protection scores in lab tests
  • Free to use and download
  • Useful bonus features

Cons:

  • Slower than average
  • Requires regular upgrading
  • Slow boot-time scans

AVG AntiVirus is popular because it’s a full internet security suite that can be downloaded for free.  For free software, it performs well against other options.

Despite the price tag, AVG receives top scores in its abilities to remove malware, detect and remove viruses, and block suspicious URLs.  What stands out with AVG is its unique phishing detection.

Under tests, AVG detected over 97% of phishing sites before they had been identified and blacklisted, which beat out Kaspersky by one point (Bitdefender and Norton detected 99%, and McAfee found 100%).

AVG provides all the other standard features you would expect in an internet security suite, with one little extra.  Its file shredding feature overwrites all data on your files prior to deleting them.  This feature is not part of all internet security suites.

What’s the difference between internet security and antivirus?

Antivirus software is the most basic level of protection for your devices and networks.  It scans, quarantines, and removes viruses and malware without offering extra protection features.  Internet security expands on antivirus software capabilities by scanning existing files and software, monitoring activity, and searching for vulnerable areas.

Internet security suites are tailored for internet use protection, whereas antivirus software is tailored to protect a device on its own.

Internet security products are called ‘suites’ because they actually incorporate several different software programs within a single interface.

Firewalls, spam blockers, ad blockers, webcam and microphone protection, keylogger protection, parental controls, and credit card and banking safeguards are all individual software.  Malware, spyware, and adware protection are different software again.

When you purchase an internet security suite, you get all of this software built into one.
